Water pollution has many causes. Some of them include sewage and fertilizers containing nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates. Pollution is also caused when silt and other suspended solids, such as soil, wash off plowed fields, construction and logging sites, urban areas, and waste-filled river banks when it rains. Three last forms of water pollution exist in the forms of petroleum, radioactive substances, and heat. Water pollution is a big problem and if we don't fix it, it could effect us in a bad way.

The effect of water pollution are varied and depend on what chemicals are dumped and in what locations. Many bodies of water near urban areas are very polluted. This is because both garbage dumped by individuals and dangerous chemicals legally or illegally dumped by industries and factories. Dead fish, birds, dolphins, and many other animals wind up on beaches, killed by harmful pollutants. Many areas are now being effected by careless human pollution, and this pollution is coming back to hurt humans.

We really want to improve water quality but it's very difficult. We may not even have the authority to prevent or enforce better water quality. The words "flexibility" and "discretion" are demanded over and over again, as in we deserve more flexibility and more discretion in our water quality. Environmentalists and the public cannot overstate the importance of fishable and swimmable waters. Unfortunately, cost effectiveness for the city has, to this point, meant allowing a culture of pollution to prevail.
